A Meaningful Activity Based on The Velveteen Rabbit for Special Education Students

Stories play an important role in special education by supporting students’ language development, social skills, and emotional growth. As part of our literacy and social-emotional learning activities, we introduced our students to the beloved children's story The Velveteen Rabbit. Through a variety of interactive and hands-on activities inspired by the story, students had the opportunity to explore important themes such as friendship, love, belonging, and self-worth while developing a range of academic and life skills.

Introducing the Story

Our activity began with a shared reading session of The Velveteen Rabbit. Using illustrated pages, visual supports, and guided discussion, students listened to the story and became familiar with its main characters and events. Throughout the reading, students were encouraged to make predictions, answer simple comprehension questions, and share their thoughts about what might happen next.

The visual elements of the story helped students remain engaged and supported their understanding of the plot. By following the sequence of events, students practiced listening comprehension, attention, and memory skills in an enjoyable and meaningful context.

Exploring Feelings and Emotions

One of the most valuable aspects of The Velveteen Rabbit is its focus on emotions and relationships. After reading the story, students participated in a discussion about the feelings experienced by the characters. Using emotion cards and visual aids, they identified moments when the rabbit felt happy, loved, lonely, excited, or sad.

Students were also encouraged to connect these emotions to their own experiences. They shared situations in which they had felt similar emotions and discussed ways to express their feelings appropriately. This activity supported emotional awareness, communication skills, and empathy, all of which are essential areas of development for many special education students.

Creative Art Activity: Designing Our Own Velveteen Rabbits

Following the story discussion, students took part in a creative art project. Using colored paper, cotton balls, fabric scraps, markers, and other craft materials, each student created their own version of the Velveteen Rabbit.

This activity provided opportunities to strengthen fine motor skills through cutting, gluing, coloring, and assembling materials. It also encouraged creativity and self-expression. Every rabbit was unique, reflecting each student's imagination and personality. Once completed, students proudly shared their creations with classmates, helping to build confidence and communication skills.

Drama and Role-Playing

To deepen understanding of the story, students participated in a drama activity where they acted out selected scenes from The Velveteen Rabbit. Some students played the rabbit, while others portrayed the child or other characters from the story.

Role-playing allowed students to experience the events of the story from different perspectives. It encouraged social interaction, turn-taking, listening, and cooperative play. By stepping into the characters' roles, students gained a deeper understanding of the emotions and experiences presented in the story, further strengthening their empathy and perspective-taking skills.

Sequencing and Comprehension Activities

To reinforce comprehension, students were given picture cards representing key events from the story. They worked individually or in small groups to place the images in the correct order. This activity helped develop sequencing skills, logical thinking, memory, and understanding of cause-and-effect relationships.

Additional concept-based activities focused on vocabulary and basic concepts such as big and small, old and new, real and pretend. Students explored these ideas through examples from the story, making abstract concepts more concrete and easier to understand.
